My favorite type of films

Dr Will Caster (played by Johnny Depp), presenting at a conference about the creation of a sentient computer (from Transcendence)

People were shocked at him who was revived in the technological form.

But his consciousness could not replace him who was dead, and ...

There are two movies that I do not hesitate to choose when I am asked if there are any movies that were most impressive to me.
They are Source Code (2011, directed by Duncan Jones) and Transcendence (2014, directed by Wally Pfister).

Both movies talk about 'eternity' and 'consciousness' of humans, or to put them together, 'the eternity of consciousness', which are the theme that has caught me up all the time since when I was in high school.
Maybe the reason that I've adhered so obsessively to writing my journal is also related to my concerns with the theme.

In addition, both films depict such complex or controversial scientific narratives in a beautifully emotional way.
Although they are categorised in a Science Fiction Movie genre and were advertised as thriller movies, they are actually more like psychological or philosophical romantic dramas, if this kind of genre exists.

I still vividly remember certain scenes in the movies, such as the scene in Source Code of the kiss at the last second of the consciousness of the male lead, with the time of the people around him  in the train being stopped forever.

And certain lines were very insightful, such as, in Transcendence, what the main character exchanged with a person in the audience in his presentation, who later shot him with a gun after the conference. The man asked the main character a question which actually criticised him that the ultimate goal of his project was to become god. As an answer to the man's question, the main character cynically asked in return if that isn't what humans always try to do.

I think the reason that both were not very successful at the box office was that in the first place both films were not that kind of movies that could satisfy the people who go to the cinema only to see some cool actions and exciting plots that are usually expected in such movies labelled as sci-fi thriller.
It is no surprise that those people are perplexed and annoyed by movies like Source Code and Transcendence when confronting the questions about meanings of life that they raise to us and their implications about this world and our existence as a mortal creature.

Captain Colter Stevens (played by Jake Gyllenhaal), puzzled at the appearance in the mirror, which is, in place of himself, one of the train passengers who is a history teacher  (from Source Code)

It took some time to realise why he was sitting in a train car heading for Chicago, and who he really was.

However, everything gets to be sorted out, and ...
