The course of my interests

Sometimes by writing down the tract I have walked on, I realise what I have been doing up to now.
Basically I'm not that kind of person who is keen on planning ahead when working or studying.
So it is interesting to see what I am doing now and what I have been doing until now from the perspective of official document questions.
Last week, I had to complete the form called 'Overseas Study Plans' to submit to my school in Seoul, from which I am on a leave now.
It was a compulsory process to get recognised of my research in the UK from the foundation of my school, but while writing, it made me retrace the course of my interests.
It was in 2011 that I began to write something in my mind.
I contributed some book reviews to my school monthly magazine, but the space that was allowed for my article was so limited that I began to seek other ways to express my thoughts.
I followed the path that my thoughts headed for.
Sometimes I was completely overwhelmed by my thoughts, but other times I completely forgot those concerns and devoted myself to other things.
Since I came to Scotland, I have always tried to find certain meanings from my work, which seemed to be about a very different subject from both my previous concern and the one that I predict would be my future concern.
For me it was more important task than any other things.
And now I have come to find that I was on a consistent path regarding both my personal aim and academic curiosity.
The one whom I found on the path was an individualist who was struggling to establish his identity in such a collectivistic society.
It is no coincidence that there are the protagonists in my works both in my master's dissertation and PhD thesis who are the type of persons, whether figurative or real, struggle to maintain their identities in society through adhering to their philosophical and professional beliefs rather than just following the stream of their times.

1. 본인의 대학원 수학 등 연구 실적 중 학문적으로 관심을 갖게 된 주 분야와 그 연구 내용:

석사 학위 취득 전, 의학 및 생물학적 분석에 입각한 인간의 사회적 행위 전략을 논설한 본인의 저서 (우리안의 개인주의와 집단주의, 책과나무, 2013년) 에서 본인은 역사 속 개인의 도덕적 및 지적 발전에 사회와 국가가 어떠한 관계를 맺어 왔는지에 대한 주제에 관심을 갖제 되었습니다.

이후 제 관심은 일관되게 역사 속 개인의 자기 발전 노력과 사회적 맥락과의 관계에 대한 탐구에 초점을 두게 되었고, 석사 학위 논문 (서울대학교 의과대학원) 역시 그러한 연장 선에서 인문의학을 주제 영역으로 하여 1950년대 한국사회의 치과의사의 모습을 전문직업성의 관점에서 도덕적 및 의학적으로 분석하였습니다. (논문제목: 전후 소설에 나타난치과의사의 형상화와 전문직업성 연구: 손창섭의 <잉여인간>을 중심으로, 서울대학교 석사논문, 2014년)

박사 과정을 처음 시작하면서 19세기 영국 여성의 여행을 주제로 잡았으나 논문집필의 세부 단계에서 연구 초점을 여성사에서 의학사로 바꾸는 것을 지도교수 (과학사 및 여성사 전공) 로 부터 권유 받아, E. W. Lane (1823 – 1889, 1849년 에딘버러 의대 졸업) 에 의해 제기된 위생의학 (Hygienic Medicine) 을 19세기 중후반 영국의 사회 및 의학적 맥락에서 분석하는 논문을 쓰고 있습니다. 본 연구를 통해 19세기 중후반 영국 의료 개혁 (medical reform) 과 사회 개혁 (social reform) 의 제 현상들을 사회사 및 의학사적 관점에서 심도있게 분석하는 것이 본 논문의 목표입니다.
